Community Pasta Lunch Fundraiser
for Amanda and Francis Ryall

The Windsor-Essex Chapter of RNAO held a pasta luncheon fundraiser to support Amanda and Francis Ryall, husband and wife, as they both battle cancer.
Thank you Windsor Essex County for all of your support. With your generosity we were able to donate $5500 to the Ryall Family. A special thank you to the Ciociaro Club Servers!
Amanda is a Public Health Nurse at the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit in the Healthy Babies Healthy Children Program. Amanda, was diagnosed with breast cancer in the fall of 2013 and is receiving short-term disability which sets to run out this spring. She does not have long-term disability coverage.
Francis worked at Henry Ford Hospital in Michigan as an RN, as well as St. Clair College teaching nursing, before he was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2011. He hasn't been able to work and relies on a small disability pension from the U.S., where he worked as a nurse.
The Ryalls, have been married for 17 years and have four children between the ages of five and nine. Nursing peers are jumping in to support the family in many ways. It’s our hopes that the afternoon will give the family a boost in spirits and reduce stress over financial pressures

The 2013 Windsor Essex Chapter AGM was a fun and educational event. The event featured two wonderful guest speakers: Jean Echlin and Janet Kelly. Jean Echlin an RN and MScN presented a very inspirational lecture. She spoke about the importance of integrating informed palliative care into nursing practice, including the importance of pain management and emphasizing aspects of physical, mental and spiritual care of the client and the nurse. Jean also spoke about her advocacy against a nursing role in euthanasia. Through her compassion, dedication and advocacy she continues to be a role model to the nursing profession! Thank you for sharing your time and experience with us Jean!
Janet Kelly, president of the Rotary Club Windsor and leader of Project Jirapa, provided us with an update on the Rotary Club current Project in Ghana.
Thank you to all participants who generously donated to Project Jirapa and to the train a nurse in Ghana initiative. Janet Kelly's presentation, along with an update on our progress towards the Train a Nurse in Ghana Scholarship, will be posted soon!

On June 5th 2013, this year's nursing student graduates wrote their Canadian Registered Nursing Exam (CRNE). Members of the Windsor Essex Chapter of RNAO were present to greet students after their exam with a congratulatory Chocolate treat and information about becoming an RNAO member. We would like to welcome these students into the profession.

To date we have approximately $1350 in donations/pledges. Our goal is to raise $3600.

Complementary Therapy Event
April 19, 2013- The Hospice of Windsor and Essex County
Windsor-Essex RNAO Chapter was proud to present, An Evening With Kim Watson a Complementary Therapist on; “Complementary Therapies: Myth, Magic, or the Next Big Thing in Healthcare?”.
The evening featured local practitioners of complementary therapies offering free mini-treatments, such as Therapeutic Touch,Acupuncture, Massage and Chiropractic!
This event offered plenty of time to learn about several different complementary therapies, network with professionals and enjoy a lovely meal. Thank you to all of the professionals who volunteered their time to provide mini-treatments to participants. A special thank you goes to Kim Watson for her passionate presentation, informing on the vision to integrate complementary therapies into treatment, the benefits of self- care practices, and the future of complementary therapies in health care.

ACTION PLAN FOR HEALTH CARE IN ONTARIO

The Honorable Deb Matthews Minister of Health and Long Term-Care presented the McGuinty’s government action plan to transform healthcare. Improving access to care and quality for care· Navigating tough fiscal and demographic challenges. Many members of the Windsor-Essex Chapter attended, including students. The Executive Committee supported strong RNAO representation by buying a table of 8 and inviting members to attend. The event was a great opportunity to network with local politicians, and influential members of the Windsor Essex Community.
CARE - Centre for Internationally Educated Nurses
Members of the Windsor-Essex Chapter attended the opening ceremonies of the launch of the Windsor office.
Key note speaker: Teresa Piruzza (MPP Windsor West),Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister Responsible for Women's Issues. This exciting Centre helps nurses who have been trained in other countries, successfully navigate the processes to begin practicing in Ontario and obtain education and language skills to gain employment in the nursing field.
